I am the person behind Winnow. I love food and its ability to bring people together, nourish us, and spur creativity. I also believe in balance and that sometimes you want a recipe that challenges you to layer ingredients you wouldn’t typically combine and sometimes you need a cheap meal that takes less than 20 minutes to make.
I wanted to create a beautiful space where recipes were inspiring and attainable. Where people could find things to eat no matter what food sensitivities they had. And that they could enjoy eating together with their friends and family who have iron stomachs.
In October 2018, I was diagnosed with Endometriosis. My doctor recommended I try a low-inflammatory diet to help manage my pain and symptoms. I cut out gluten, soy, dairy (except organic butter), corn, and refined sugar.
The change was like night and day for me. I didn’t think I would be able to manage my pain let alone manage it almost completely naturally through diet (and supplements). Eating a low inflammatory diet helped me manage my pain and inflammation so much that I decided to adopt it as a new part of my lifestyle. It was worth cutting out these common ingredients (that I loved) in order to find relief.
However, I quickly found it hard to find the resources I needed to cook at home that weren’t overly clinical, bland or uninspiring. I went to my local book store (Powells) which is actually a sort of Mecca for all the books and they had a total of 3 books on the subject. All three were spiral bound- published in the early 2000s and looked like they were printed at Office Depot.
As I talked to others I found they were experiencing similar things. Doctors recommended they cut out certain inflammatory foods either temporarily or permanently but they found it hard to stick to a regimented diet, even if it was helping them, simply because the resources were uninspiring or non-existent.
I learned to love making adaptations to recipes. I wanted to share it with others and encourage them to do what was best for their bodies. I wanted to share inspiring recipes that tasted great, were beautiful and approachable. That’s what sparked the idea for Winnow. And here were are now!
